There are two special reasons that I want to share this me-time “recipe” with you. First of all, May is WOMEN’S HEALTH MONTH, so we are being especially mindful about our health, and it’s also the season for the watermelon!
While we all know how delicious slices of watermelon are, did you know that it also can be incredibly rejuvenating and incredibly therapeutic when applied to your skin? Without a doubt, it is! So, this month, we thought we’d pay extra attention to our skin and its health, and skin cells damaged by external factors such as UV rays need help to regain their collagen and elastin proteins in order to prevent skin sagging and hyperpigmentation, also known as age spots. So, this recipe we created using our favorite watermelons from Melon 1 will help you get your skin looking radiant and simply glowing!
Watermelons are the main focus here and the star ingredient that makes this scrub so powerful and beneficial to your skin. Watermelons truly are packed with anti-oxidants and other essential vitamins and minerals, but they will also target your skin’s health when directly applied to it. Different than consuming watermelon, this topical application will specifically help your skin itself, versus when you eat it its benefits will be dispersed to other areas and organs as well, and first. In fact, only 1% to 3% will actually end up benefitting the skin, so I love the idea of really layering it on the skin itself!
We all know that anti-oxidants are essential and helpful, but which ones do watermelons have? They have many of the most potent and essential anti-oxidants that will benefit skin itself! This includes Vitamin C and E, both of which can penetrate your skin’s surface easily because they are so small. Their molecular weight is ultra light, allowing them to really penetrate, and their antioxidant protection is much higher because these two are combined, rather than just offering the vitamin C or E alone. However, each Vitamin still has its own benefit.
Vitamin C will help helps your body make collagen, a protein that wanes as we age and is so critical in keeping your skin supple and youthful. Vitamin E can help with those dark, brown spots by lightening them with use. Face it, (no pun intended), but hyperpigmentation can become quite pronounced in later years due to our sun exposure, so this is especially helpful to combat this!
This is not all, as watermelon has even more to improve your skin! Red-fleshed Watermelon also is packed with Vitamin A, which works great with the other two vitamins, in creating and repairing the skin cells. It will help fight off infections, encourage growth of collagen and elastin cells that helps your skin stay young and supple as well. Plus, Vitamin A has also been shown to help restore skin after stress - think windburn and sunburn in particular.
Speaking of red-fleshed Watermelon, this means that it also has something extra special as well, lycopene. This is what gives it its red color and is known as a very potent, powerful anti-oxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory carotenoid. Its anti-inflammatory properties are also very beneficial to soothing irritated skin.
Plus, since watermelon is mostly made of water, this high water content of watermelon will boost the moisture in your skin, making your skin glow. Just as watermelon is so hydrating the body, it is especially hydrating when applied directly to the skin as well!
Now, we might not be used to saving the rind itself, but actually watermelon rind can be beneficial, too! In fact, it has been used for generations in Korea as a way to solve problem areas of the skin - to reduce and calm redness and inflammation, with a bonus that it can even speed up the cell turnover process.
So, what is the easiest and best way to start using watermelon? Why not use it as a delicious, decadent and soothing, scrub to prepare your skin for glowing in all of your summer lifestyle activities! Here’s an easy yet powerful scrub that you can try to start. Good luck not taking a bite!
